Kauai Bakeries to Experience

Passion Bakery Cafe

A hidden gem in Kapa’a (4-356 Kuhio Highway, Suite 121) that serves some of the best pastries on the island. Passion bakery in Kauai serves their famous Malasadas (cinnamon, sugar or cream filled) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only from 7am-12pm. I’ve seen people get upset that they can’t get them any day, but their website clearly states the days and times they’re available. Choose from cream flavors such as Vanilla bean, Coconut, Haupia, Ube, Chocolate and more.

They made the list of the best bakeries in Hawaii, the only bakery in Kauai to do so. We tried their Malasadas and have to agree that they are one of the best Kauai bakeries! I especially liked the Coconut Malasada I had.

Along with their delicious Malasadas they serve anytime breakfast, sandwiches and lunch plates. Coffee, Tea and Frappes are also on the menu with a variety of other drink options as well. Also a big plus is that they offer gluten free and vegan options.

Midnight Bear Breads

I just recently discovered Midnight Bear Bakery in Kauai. They are located in Hanapepe at 3830 Hanapepe Road and offer a wide variety of tasty breads, croissants, danish, cinnamon rolls and morning buns. They also have sandwiches and pizza!

Enjoy Artisan Organic breads such as Ciabatta, Baguette, and a collection of sourdough choices that are baked in an Italian stone hearth. Their pastries are made from high quality, organic ingredients including 100% European style butter and are crispy, flaky and delicious. This charming bakery is definitely one to try, especially if you’re a die-hard bread lover like myself.

Kauai Bakery

Located in Kukui Grove at 3-2600 Kaumualii HWY. Suite 1526 in Lihue, Kauai Bakery was voted best Kauai Bakery + best Malasadas, according to their website. Find yummy delights such as cinnamon rolls, turnovers, croissants, pies, cakes and of course malasadas!

Their malasadas are indeed delicious and my daughter and I had a coconut turnover that was to die for! So crispy and flavorful, but unfortunately I didn’t snap a pic as we ate in the car on the way up to Waimea Canyon. My daughter did get get a photo of Kauai Bakery’s famous Malasadas.

Haole Girl Island Sweets

After a distinguished career as a successful pastry chef that included being featured in many magazines and TV stations including the Food Network, Chef Judy opened her bakery on Kauai in May of 2013.

Every step of the baking process is done by hand at Haole Girl Island Sweets, from mixing to decorating. Located at 4-1161 Kuhio Highway in Kapaa, they offer cookies, muffins, cakes and more! Choose from savory croissants such as ham and cheddar with lilikoi mustard, havarti with mushroom and onion and Kilauea goat cheese with spinach and sun-dried tomato. Or sweet filled croissants in flavors like dark chocolate, pear and fig with almond frangipane and Maui gold pineapple with cream cheese filling. Aloha Sweet Delights

Locally owned and located at 1-2550 Kaumualii Hwy in Kaumakani, Kauai, Aloha Sweet Delights bake their treats fresh daily. This old fashioned bakery provides delightful sweets that are easy to grab and go. I also noticed that their treats are available at other locations on the South and East side such as Island Country Markets at The Coconut Marketplace and the Lihue airport.

This Kauai Bakery has been in business on the Westside for over 50 years and also has a mini mart in their location! Enjoy an extensive selection of turnovers, cinnamon rolls, fritters, pies, and more. And of course Malasadas! I can’t decide between the classic buttermilk donut or a chocolate Eclair, I love them both so much it’s hard to choose!

Kauai Kookie Bakery & Kitchen

You can find Kauai Kookie Marketplace, Bakery & Cafe at 2-2436 Kaumualii Hwy in Kalaheo, HI. But you can also find them online and in a wide variety of stores, even on the mainland. Visiting the Kookie factory (located in Hanapepe) where the cookies are made is a special experience though that you just can’t get when you pick them up at your local supermarket.

Originally there were only eight flavors of Kauai Kookie: Kona Coffee Macadamia, Chocolate Chip Macadamia, Peanut Butter, Guava Macadamia, Coconut Krispies, Cornflake Crunch, Macadamia Nut Shortbread, and Almond. But now even more varieties have been added and baked fresh daily using Hawaii’s finest ingredients. The Classic Coconut Krispies are my favorite!

Although Orly Patisserie isn’t a totally gluten free bakery on Kauai, they do offer some gluten free, dairy free and egg free choices when it comes to their cookies, cakes and French macaroons. I have to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Macaroons but my kids love them. And boy does this Kauai bakery have them! Flavors like Guava, Chocolate, Fruity Pebbles, Lilikoi, Ube and more!

Not to mention there vast array of other baked goods: Breakfast items like croissants, sticky buns, scones, Danish, muffins and more. Cookies such as Almond Biscotti, snickerdoodle, Mango shortbread and chocolate chip, to name a few. Then there are breads, cupcakes and cream puffs.

I’m most excited to try their bars, lemon to be exact. Oh and I can’t forget to mention their cakes and cheesecakes….especially the cheesecake, my favorite!

In need of a custom cake or a wedding cake? They’ve got you covered! Be sure to stop by and check out Orly Patisserie during your next trip to the Garden Isle!
