Best Things to do on Kauai North Shore
Hanalei Bay
Why not start off with a bang! Hanalei Bay is an amazing, dare I say magical experience. The pier, the ocean, the mountains and the palm trees are a sight to behold. It’s a definite must-see on your visit to the North Shore of Kauai.

Kilauea Light House
Located at the Northern most point of the Hawaiian islands is the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse. . If you want to visit the lighthouse up close there is a fee and reservations are required, but it can be seen from the overlook at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
As well as a gorgeous view of the Kilauea Light House, the Wildlife Refuge has a spectacular view of the ocean. Parking is limited but it’s free to observe a variety of birds, spinner dolphins, humpback whales, green sea turtles and monk seals.

Anini Beach
A favorite spot among locals and tourists alike, Anini Beach Park is one of the few places on Kauai that allows camping (with a permit). The beach is simply spectacular and typically sports fewer crowds than Hanalei. There are restrooms, picnic tables, and even showers available. But no life guards, so make sure you’re a strong swimmer or stick with just getting your toes wet.
Hanalei Town
A charming, quaint little town to explore with shops, restaurants and food trucks galore. Get your shopping on and explore good eats at Chin Young Village and Hanalei Center. The small town feel is captivating, the kind of place that makes you want to quit your day job and spend your days hanging out and enjoying the simple things in life.

Local Cuisine
There is no shortage of delectable places to eat on the island, and up North is no exception. Experiencing local food is one of the best things about visiting Kauai, in my opinion. Have a look at this post to find some delightful North Shore Kauai Restaurants.

Ha’ena Beach Park
Visit Ha’ena Beach Park (not to be confused with Ha’ena State Park, which is not free and requires reservations) and enjoy a gorgeous sandy beach with a freshwater stream. Picnic tables, restrooms, and outdoor showers are available. Lifeguards are also on duty. Parking is very limited, it’s best to arrive early.

Wai’oli Hui’ia Church
The little green church in Hanalei, Kauai is one of the most photographed buildings on the island. Supposedly tours are offered Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a first come, first served basis. However, there is no mention of that on their actual website so I would give a call to be sure before heading over.

Wai’oli Mission House
This home was built in 1836 as a home for missionary teachers Abner and Lucy Wilcox and their children. It was lovingly restored by their granddaughters in 1921. Tours are available at Wai’oli Mission House by reservation only on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10:00am- 1:00pm. Located at 5-5373 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, HI. Call (808) 826-1528 to make a reservation.
Free Things to do on the North Shore of Kauai
Maniniholo Dry Cave
Directly across from Ha’ena Beach Park is Maniniholo Dry Cave. The first time we drove by it we weren’t able to stop as the only parking is in the small parking lot across the street. But on our next visit we were able to go in and explore the cave, and what a neat experience. Looking at it from the outside, it’s almost other-worldly (kind of reminds me of something you’d see in Avatar, lol!)

Scenic Drive
Part of having fun on your Kauai vacation is to explore the island, and there’s nothing like a scenic drive to show you the true beauty of the Garden Island. We had so much fun exploring different parts of the island. Everything was so stunning, sometimes it felt like it wasn’t real…it’s just so amazing, words cannot describe how breathtaking Kauai is.
Hanalei Valley Lookout
On Kuhio Highway near Princeville (near the entrance of the Princeville Mall) Hanalei Valley Lookout is one of the most spectacular things to do on the North Shore. I know I’m repeating myself but this islands is so gorgeous, and this overlook is something really special.

Hanalei Bay Lookout
Right down the road from the Hanalei Valley Lookout you can pull off to the right side of the Kuhio Highway (going towards the North Shore) and get a glorious view of Hanalei Bay. As the road winds down towards Hanalei the views are simply magical. It’s one of my favorite places to grab a quick picture and is definitely one of the coolest things to do on the North Shore of Kauai!
Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge
Newly opened to the public on April 30, 2024, the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge viewpoint site is a place where you can not only see beautiful views. but also learn about native species and their habitats. Located on Kuhio Highway in Princeville, just before the Hanalei Valley lookout. I can’t wait to stop on my next visit!
